In June 2023, the former "School of Mechanical Electronic and Information Engineering" was divided into "School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering" and "School of Artificial Intelligence". The School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering consists of the Department of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, the Department of Intelligent Control and Robotics, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation, the Teaching and Scientific Research Experimental Center, and the Institute of Intelligent Mining and Robotics.
The school covers two first-level disciplines: Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. At present, there are doctoral degree programs in first-level discipline of Mechanical Engineering (covering four doctoral degree programs in second-level disciplines of Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation, Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Design and Theory, and Vehicle Engineering), and doctoral degree programs in first-level discipline of Electrical Engineering (covering five doctoral degree programs in second-level disciplines of Electric Machinery and Electric Apparatus, Power Systems and Automation, High Voltage and Insulation Technology, Power Electronics and Electric Drives, Theory and New Technology of Electrical Engineering). There are two postdoctoral research mobile stations in Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, two national key disciplines in Power Electronics and Electric Drives, Mechanical Design and Theory. In 2021, the "Discipline Innovation and Talent Recruitment Base ofMining Robot Engineering" was awarded as the Ministry of Education's Discipline Innovation and Talent Recruitment Base for Colleges and Universities.
The school currently has four undergraduate programs: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Automation, Robotics Engineering, and Intelligent Manufacturing. Since 2019, Mechanical Engineering and Robotics Engineering have been enrolled under the category of "Mechanical Engineering”, and the majors will be distributed in the third semester after enrollment. Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Automation are characteristic specialties of the Ministry of Education and the Beijing Municipal Education Commission. The Mechanical Engineering has been selected as the national first-class undergraduate major construction site, while the Electrical Engineering and Automation, and Robotics Engineering have been selected as the first-class undergraduate major construction sites in Beijing. The school has a Beijing excellent teaching team of Mechanical Engineering, a Beijing experimental teaching demonstration center of Electrical Engineering, a Beijing demonstration innovation practice base of Mechanical Engineering, one national engineering practice education center, three Beijing municipal off-campus talent training bases for colleges and universities, and one key laboratory of the Ministry of Emergency Management.
The school has a strong faculty with rigorous academic standards. At present, it has one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, four Beijing Municipal Distinguished Teachers, one recipient of the Ministry of Education’s "New Century Excellent Talents Support Program", two recipients of the Special Government Allowance, two recipients of the National Coal Youth Science and Technology Award, one winner of Sun Yueqi Energy Award, three recipients of the "Beijing Science and Technology New Star Plan", one recipient of the "Young Talents Support Project" of the China Association for Science and Technology, and four recipients of the Beijing Excellent Talent Training Program. The school currently has a total of 83 faculty members, including 19 professors (including researchers) and 41 associate professors (including senior engineers and senior experimentalists). In addition, the school has a long-term appointment with one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
The school is committed to talent cultivation and scientific research in the fields of mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, and materials, and has completed several high-level scientific research projects including the national "13th Five-Year Plan" science and technology research, National 863 and 973 key projects, 985 advantageous discipline platform construction, 211 project platform construction, double first-class discipline construction, and National Natural Science Foundation projects, and has obtained two new engineering research and practice projects of the Ministry of Education. The school has won two first prizes and two second prizes of the Beijing Education and Teaching Achievement Award, 15 education and teaching achievement awards in the coal industry, the one second prize of the National Invention Award and one second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2017, and one first prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education in 2019.
The school currently has more than 1400 undergraduates and graduate students. Based on the key disciplines and adhering to the principles of moral education and talent cultivation, the school cultivates high-level interdisciplinary engineering technology and innovation talents with a solid foundation, broad knowledge, strong practical skills and a focus on innovation. These talents are equipped with an international perspective and the capability for sustainable development. The school actively promotes international education, strengthens foreign exchanges and cooperation, and has established academic exchange and cooperation relations with Pennsylvania State University, University of Michigan, Technical University of Freiberg in Germany, University of Mons in Belgium, etc. The exchange programs contain various forms including short-term exchange, 2+2, 3+1, 3+2, 4+2 and so on. In recent years, we have actively organized undergraduate students to participate in different kinds of competitions, such as the National Electronic Design Competition, the Capital University Mechanical Innovation Design Competition, the Beijing University Student Robot Competition, the National University Student Metallographic Skills Competition. In 2022, the percentage of students from the school who received provincial and ministerial-level awards accounted for 41.91% of the total number of award-winning students in the university. The "Internet +" competition project "Titanium Tiger - Intelligent Robot Products and Core Components", directed by our faculty, has won the national gold medal, which created the best performance in the history of our university. The rate of recommended graduate students in the college is around 17%, with over 80% of recommended students being admitted to "Double First-Class" universities such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
